Are turkeys hard to keep?

The worst part of having them as pets running loose on your property is that they will roost on your cars and house roofs. That means alot of poop and scratches on your cars that are left out. They love the railings on your decks and again alot of poop. If allowed to run free on your property amongst everything they can make a big mess. They love eating flower gardens and all. So I suggest that you have a fence or something to keep them were they belong and then they are real fun.

Mine are skittish still...... unless I have a food bowl

Is that how you all end up with such friendly turkeys? LOTS of treats?

Mine don't get excited for treats. They like it when I talk turkey with them. I can't gobble but I can make some of the other noises they make and they come right up close like they know what I am saying. It is very funny.

walk around and say 'chuck chuck chuck chuck'. they'll show up right quick.

I just got my first poults last night and let me tell you.......these guys are really cute. I mean they are so cute they are making me feel like a monster for eventually eating one. They make baby chickens look like dog puke.

Big eyes, long neck and very sociable right from day one. With chicks, best case they are mildly currious, worst case they are ablivios to your presence. These poults though.....they give you this look....like they are really trying to figure you out. You can almost see them thinking.

Chicks tend to run away from you when you reach in the brooder, but these guys get up and run over to you (guess they think my hand is mom and i;ve got some goodies)

BTW They were all eating and drinking withi n an hour of being placed in the brooder with no help from me. So far their reputation as being "dumber than chicks" is totaly unwaranted.

They are something else aren't they? And very different than chicks - they aren't dumb by any means but they do have their quirks.

yes, quirky is exactly the proper term for them. they aren't dumb, but have weird ways about them.

mine fly out of the pens then want to get back in. they sit and cry for me to let them in. um, turn around and fly back over just isn't an option apparently!

That sounds like our guineas. Have you ever noticed they are always on the wrong side of the fence - no matter which side they are on
