We recently got a pair of bourbon reds for breeding. I was under the impression the hen would only lay in the spring? But she laid an egg today. Then would this egg be fertile or do they just breed in the spring?

How old is your Tom. Has your Tom mounted your hen?

The guy we got him from said he was from last year's hatch. Which puts him well over a year old.

It could be fertile. But, if it is, hatching in early Nov. would require indoor brooding for quite some time. Fall is Spring in reverse. For about a week-and-half (end of Sept.. early Oct.) our hens will sometimes present, and be bred, but have only found a few eggs over the years.
