are wood chips in the chicken run OK?

I am converting my sons play structure into a chicken coop. We put wood chips all around the play structure - 4-6 in deep over landscaping fabric. In the coop area (under the play structure) I removed fabric and wood chips, but I was wondering if I have to remove it from the run area too or if I can leave it?

Cedar = not advisable, but somewhat acceptable. Can cause breathing problems.
Pine = deep litter method. Check it out!

Not sure what wood it is - we have done the play area 4 years ago but I doubt it is cedar as cedar is not common in this area. The color is light a touch darker than the pine shavings I use in the brooder but than they have been sitting outside for years

Since you said the mulch has been sitting around 4 years it's well aged and would be a good base for the run. Might have to keep an eye on the landscape fabric under it to make sure the chickens don't tear that up.

I'd take the landscape fabric up. The chickens will dig down to it.

Agrees on removing the landscape fabric.
Wood chips will make a great start for run bedding.
