Are your cats Indoor, Outdoor, or Both?

I live in the country, but my property faces a fairly busy road and I do have neighbors within cat range. The cat I moved out here with has always been an indoor only kitty. He has no outdoor life skills and would be munched on fast. After I moved in I aquired a couple of half feral kittens. They lived in the chicken coop/run for months until they were big enough to range. For about a year they ranged all day and then came back to the coop for bed at night (or maybe for the mouse hunting. Who knows?). One evening I was sitting on the porch in the dark talking to my mom on the phone and I heard a THUD and a scream. Fagin had been hit and run by a car. Long story short he ended up okay in the long run, but it scared the willies out of me. Shortly thereafter both boys moved in the house with the other cat. They at times act like they would like to go out, but mostly they seem to like lounging about the house. They would probably be happier kitties indoor/outdoor, but I can't handle the stress. It would break my heart to come home one night and find a dead kitty on the street. We also have coyotes around and these guys would be a tasty dinner. It is safer in the long run for them all. Moon Pie the kitten was found in a ditch and is now on indoor baby. She seems pretty pumped about it actually, but she IS showing diva tendencies.

On the other hand, I have also apparently acquired an outdoor kitty. Fred the cat shows up when he feels like it. I have no idea what he does all day, but he is often off doing Fred Things. I leave out food for him after the chickens have been put up (they learned pretty early in the game where his food bowl was located and they are prone to gobble up his dinner). He would be miserable inside. I think he is a formerly feral cat who has figured out the good life. I let him do his thing and help him out when he shows up. I know that at some point he will end up dead. It will be too early and terribly sad, but it is part of being an outdoor cat. I can't make him be an indoor cat and wouldn't even try. Truthfully I don't really consider him to be MY cat. He's a wanderer that likes to stop in every now and again.

If I lived with close neighbors I would never have outdoor cats. Not everyone loves them like I do and it isn't fair to annoy the neighbors. Cats go where they want and you just can't train them to stay home. My right to have cats ends at my property line.

That is quite interesting, and averages is certainly right. Every outside cat I have owned has lived to be 15-17 years old. These are strictly outside cats. My outside/inside cat I have now is 8 years old and thriving.

To each their own is right, but I sort of feel sorry for all the cats locked indoors. Once again to me it seems no different then keeping chickens cooped up all the time. I let my chickens free range, knowing the dangers of predators but it is good for their quality of life to be out and about, same goes for cats IMO.

However, if the cat is NOT fixed then DO keep it inside or fix it. All my cats are altered and were never let outside until that happened

I am definately not going to add to the cat population in the US.

I have 4 and all are outdoors. I inherited a barn cat when I bought this farm a few years ago who had a litter of kittens. She was very friendly so I had her spayed, gave away 4 kittens and kept 2. I also had these spayed/neutered/immunizations etc. A few weeks ago I found a young kitten about 3 months old coming out from under the barn and the same day found a tiny scrawny kitten in the USDA parking lot which I took home. Both kittens have been to the vet, are socialized and I bring the tiny one into the mud room at night to protect him from night prowlers.
These cats have warmth in and under the barns and are fed and watered every day. I am allergic to cats and so is my GD so they will never be in the house. I certainly don't consider myself a bad owner b/c my cats are outside. They do a great job of mouse exterminating and yes they also get a few birds but that's just part of life. I also free range the chickens and we do have hawks around here. Thankfully, they haven't gotten a chicken yet but I'm sure it will happen one day. I just have to think they had a great life with one bad day!

I have five - three are indoor/outdoor and one is over 10 - the other two - one is deaf, the other is too small and scared to be able to go outside. They are THE best hunters all around

Joedie, excellent job!!!!!!!!!

I think it's whatever the cat is use to... Cats that have been raised inside only probably are very happy, as they don't know any different. Barn cats raised in a barn...same thing (but IMO they should always be provided food/water). My cat crew are indoor/outdoor. We're in the country, so have few neighbors to "harass." For me, this is ideal. Two frequently provide for the "pack" by bringing "treats" to us...lol. I do feel bad when the treat is a small bunny

The dogs enjoy the occasional treat if they get to it before I do...
