Are your nest boxes ground level or elevated?

i have 8 laying boxes and they are just built with ply wood. I arranged them all together and foru on top and rest bottom. Not that it holds true but my hens have no problem laying in any of the boxes as long as i have hay in em but they seem to like the top ones the best. I don't have a perch in front of them but my perch for them when they go in for the night is on top of the boxes. Don't know if this is helpful but it is all I know.

I started with milk crates turned sideways for nesting boxes, filled with clean hay and some fake eggs. The hens didn't use them until I turned them up and they could climb down inside.

This morning (after I had turned in a new rooster the night before) I was missing a hen. I couldn't for the life of me figure out how a predator could have gotten in, and I was panicking a little - my neighbor lost three hens to a fox two nights ago. Well, after looking all over I found her up in the loft where I keep shavings and extra hay. She had made a nice little nest there and I found seven eggs! I was wondering why I was getting fewer eggs - I thought maybe they were going on strike. So, she's one who likes to lay her eggs up high.
