I have a duck with septic arthritus she walks on the leg with the foot backwards the other leg is beginning to twist both hocks are very swollen, she is on anti inflammatory, I have been to 3 vets who say there is no protical to treat? She is healthy otherwise, but waking ability is vital for grooming and survival. Any input would be appreciated I have tried many concepts of shoes ,her nails get caught or her foot slips backward and cannot straighten back creating more struggle for her. I want to help her , I have her from 3days old she is 5 now. Thanks

Did the Vets give her anything for the infection or what ever is causing the inflammation?

they prescribed carprofen 25 mg 2x a day ,I use a human arthritus creme on her leg rubbed in, recently she falls more ,it is like the leg is paralyzed and movement from the hip is swung outward , I give her warm baths she has a blue swedish companion with her at all times, she eats , and now having trouble grooming. Starting to use her wings for balance

If it's septic, that means the arthritis is being caused by an infection...and you say it's getting worse?...so some sort of antibiotics might help....the problem is systematic....her body is trying to fight the infection...the swelling is a symptom...I would definitely try an oral antibiotic.

She has been on several rounds of antibiotic over the last year and was tested for bacterial infection they said it was structural ,and I said how can I help her the response was that is your problem not ours? so I went to another vet it seems to be its just a duck put her down, tomorrow I shall try again going to the vet to see if there is any more solutions it's hard on her now falling not being able to lift her leg ? I am sad and very scared she has to be put down , yet if she had a proper splint she would try to walk. Thanks for caring !

Bless her heart. If she starts using her wings to balance, they will eventually get sores on them. I'm glad you are taking her back to the Vet. Ask them if they can splint her for you. It is a sad and scary thought but you do have to consider the quality of life. You have done great by her and given her a wonderful life. Good luck and keep us posted
