When I built my coop, I made 1 small mistake. Instead of putting one window horizontally and up high over the external nest boxes, I put two windows vertically right above the external nest boxes. So that means that the lids of the nest boxes are not slopped enough to keep the chickens from getting up there. They have made a mess of the paint of course. I cleaned it off, repainted it and covered it with heave duty plastic. This has worked to keep the paint clean but the poop and the dust and dirt just sit on top of the plastic and it is dirty all the time. Plus it looks terrible and the girls slip around on it. I was wondering if it would work if I covered the tops of the nest boxes with artificial turf or would the chickens try to eat it??? I don't mind them sitting up there, I would just like a better looking solution. This picture was taken prior to be putting the plastic on the lids. Thanks!

The chickens would probably try to eat it at first but after they find out it's not food would just ignore it. The thing I would be worried about is them standing on it and pooping on it. I don't know how easy artificial turf it is to clean off.
