My 5 year old FAT black sex link's comb flopped over 2 days ago and her abdomen is more swollen than normal (a year ago I took her to the vet and he did not find fluid--he said she was just fat). It doesn't feel as soft as a water balloon, but it is very bloated and squishy. I do not feel an egg, I don't believe she's laid recently but with her that's not unusual. She still eats well, and poops look amazingly normal. She is still social but I can tell she's feeling off--she's going off to bed early and trying to sleep in a nest instead of roosting.
I did get some fluid out with an 18 gauge needle tonight---clear to pale orange/pinkish. But I must be doing something wrong because I would only get a few drops and then it would quit running. I moved the needle several times (poor hen!) and tried different depths but could not get a good drip going. Is there some secret? I tried the lowest areas, several inches below the vent and to the right and left about 1.5 inches.
Also, last worming (fenbendazole) was 5 weeks ago.
