Ascites In chicken

Thank so much for your reply! I went ahead and waited on keeping the bird. The poor thing a few other problems that were discovered in the butchering process.:( Poor lady. She obviously wasn't healthy. Once again, thanks for your reply!:)

That's a good point. Would heart be obviously enlarged?

What else did you find?
The rapidly increasing muscle mass causes a demand for more oxygen carrying blood flow. A chickens lungs are fixed inside its thoracic cavity and the vessels within the lungs can expand only a little. The demand on their heart pumping rate increases in order to get more oxygen to all the new muscle fibre. The right ventricle of their heart becomes extremely taxed and overworked. This causing stretching and thickening of the ventricle walls. Venous blood pressure is continually rising as the heart tries to pump more and more and more harder but the lungs only allow a limited blood flow. Pressure inside the veins reaches a point where the vein walls can longer contain everything and fluids start leaking through the walls of the veins and pool in the body cavities; further adding to the pressure on the organs. The condition known as ascites most commonly causes death by either right ventricle failure (RVF) or pulmonary hyper tension.
