Hi everyone,
I already posted about this hen before, I don’t know how to do a link of a thread so it’s the one titled odd thing in crop and she is also mentioned in my other ascites not eating thread.
I started a new thread because I think she has to much going on for me to save her right now and I needed more help.
Her current problems:
ascites: she has had a huge abdomen for about a week now and I know it is caused by her breathing. No matter the temperature she is always breathing at a quicker pace than the rest. I have given her many things for it and she used to sneeze all the time and more so I got it under control but she still has labored breathing. I knew ascites was coming, I am not going to drain her. I think it is too risky in the state she is in and I don’t want to cause any more problems. Also it might not let her live that long afterwards anyways. I have been giving her my treatments which saved the life on another hen and it has been slowly working on her but she still has quite a big abdomen.
CROP: she has had some odd thing in her crop for awhile now. I already mentioned my thread on it. It is currently two pieces both about 1-2 inches long and they haven’t digested and it’s been a 5ish days I would say. She also isn’t eating. I have given her her favorites treats and food but she just won’t. I have isolated her from her flock for a week now because she is getting picked on and she gets bullied away from food and she already wasn’t doing well so I didn’t want to make it worse for her. She might not be eating due to the ascites or crop contenders or both. I have been giving her miconazole (only once a day) and coconut oil and another sour crop mixture.
POOPS: so I haven’t taken a picture yet but they either are super liquidy brown. Almost like a cecal poop that is super liquidy, she has had those more than once a day usually. She also has a lot of urates and only a tiny bit of poop, she isn’t eating.
Her comb and eye now: I took pictures, I don’t know what’s going on with her.

she isn’t moving around much due to the ascites and she hasn’t been eating and I think it is almost her time. She is only 4 years old and I don’t know what to do.

Sorry I just realized I made two of these threads... just respond to the other one or this one unless someone knows how to delete it

Hi. Sorry about your hen. First, I suspect the breathing is from the ascites (due to her lungs and air sacs getting crowded) and not the other way around.

If you don’t want to drain her, you might be able to help her expel some fluid on her own with Lily of the Desert Aloe Detox.

I think if I were in your shoes, I’d take her to an avian vet. If that is not an option, I might try to get her a bit stronger and then attempt a crop surgery to remove the foreign object(s). To give her some strength, would you consider tube feeding a little fluid and eventually a little baby bird formula once she is properly hydrated?

You also need to figure out what is causing the ascites, as it will just return if not corrected. However, most things that cause it are nit curable, I’m sorry to say. I’m wondering if she’s damaged her crop with whatever is in there and now has an infection. We could guess all day. Is an avian vet an option?

No sadly a vet isn’t an option. I understand what you are saying about the ascites and breathing but she has had these respiratory problems probably for over a year and the ascites for only a week.
so I have been giving her 8mL of the detox for more than a week now.
I have tube fed before and don’t mind doing it but I am slightly scared that it might cause her not to breath and also I had to tube feed a hen for more than a month who eventually ended up dying so I don’t have good experiences with it. I don’t think she will make it that long but I could tube feed.
My other hen with ascites had a huge abdomen and I gave her the detox and a little mixture and it completely went away and she hasn’t had it come back for about 2 months now so I was hoping that if she made it long enough I could cure her ascites and deal with it if it comes back.

So a little update:
She refused to move in her cage but when I let all of the chickens out she ate a tiny bit of grass and that was about it. She doesn’t move around to much, she did walk a bit but not enough to say she is acting normal but she ate a little bit. I don’t know how good that it but I really want to save her.
