Hello everyone. We found out 2 weeks ago our 5 year old Buff Orpingtion has ascites. I first found her in the yard walking like a penguin and laying down a lot. When I picked her up, her belly was very swollen. I thought she may be egg bound and when through the steps to help with that. When there was no improvement the next day I brought her to a vet. He told me she wasn't egg bound, drained her (the fluid was nearly clear in appearance and no bad odor), and said it was either a heart, liver, or tumor/cancer problem.
It has been two weeks now and she completely back to normal. She's been running around the yard, taking dust baths, and has a great appetite. I check her belly every couple of days and there is no swelling at all. I should mention the vet did give us a week treatment of Doxycycline and Fluconazole.
My question is... how long has your chicken lived after being diagnosed with ascites?? I've read through many threads and the longest i've seen is 6 months but in decline. Is that what I should expect too? How long did it take for the hen to start declining?
I appreciate your feedback
