I have four aseel hen age about eight to ten month and also a cock age 15 month. A hen is laying eggs and others are ready. But my cock does not mating with the hens. I used E-vet, codliver oil. WhenThe cock moves round the hen does not support the cock then the cock stop normally he is not aggressive. What can I do?

Have you checked the eggs for fertility?

Most chickens do most of their breeding in the mornings, probably before you come outside. The fact that he's respectful of the hens when they aren't interested is laudatory, in my opinion, and far preferable to the other extreme.

Greetings Nazrul,

It is good to prepare your rooster for breeding.

Start, by bathing his vent area. While he is wet, check his cloaca, to make sure it is free of dried poop. His vent area should be clean and not plugged with poop. Soak any poops, and gently remove them in the water.

I have heard from other chicken keepers that the skin around the vent can be red, and this can indicate that the rooster is ready to breed. This may be true, as, my 4 year old rooster is always ready to breed, and two small areas below his vent are always red.

Red skin around the rooster's vent can also be irritation from diarrhea, worms or vent gleet. And this is another reason to check your rooster from time to time. You should never breed a rooster with vent gleet, as he could infect the hen.

Some keepers also prefer to worm their roosters before breeding. Personally, I don't worm my chickens, unless, I have a fecal float test done by a vet or lab. I only give worming medication, if I am sure the chicken has worms.

I also feed my rooster extra protein, cooked meat, two weeks prior to putting him in with selected hens.

Lastly, trim or sand down the rooster's, spurs, toenails, and beak if pointy. This is for the protection of the hen.

After all this, you will have to let nature take its course. When your rooster is feeling confident and healthy, he will mate.

But, he may not mate if you have multiple roosters, and he is on the lower end of their pecking order.

These are my thoughts on preparing roosters for breeding. I hope this has been helpful.

God Bless :)
