hi iv been keeping quail for a while now and quiete enjoy it. recently a friend told me he uses ashes from his fire for his bantams to dustbathe! i tried this with my quail and they love it has anyone else tried this and does it pose any health issiues that i should be aware of thanks..

Dusting in ashes shouldn't cause any problems provided you aren't burning any wood that is pressure treated or painted or anything like that. Personally I have never tried it but i have also hear that it works well and the birds love it. I generally stick to sand.

I know a few people that use "Potash"(Wood Ash) for their dust pans and seam to have no problems. I think it's to dusty, and caustic, but that's just me. I use the much more expensive play sand in my dust pans.

A better use for potash is for the poo pile. It's far better than lime at neutralizing odor, and for what you save on lime, you can buy a bunch of sand.

i might go back to the sand! potash is defently good for the odour. i found sawdust the worst to hold odour and shaving to turn to muck quickly

That's why I say "Caustic" base! potash+water, added to a properly heated fatty acid will make soap.
