Thats how it is in parts of California.. we have a whole county called Orange county. Dad tended orange groves several hundreds of acres... well he was part of a work crew. Back wehn they burned diesel in smudge pots to keep the oranges warm during a cold snap.

Grapes too. There are acres and acres of grape vinyards that are abandoned to urban sprawl. some of those vines cling to life... the root stock has to be at least a hundred years old. Some of those vines have base stalks ten to fifteen inches in diameter... sigh.

Here we grow Avocados All those lovely granite boulders in the ground are perfect for Avocados.... keeps the soil warm during winter.

strawberries are good here too. We dont have much topsoil though.

Deb I miss living in Orange Co. and San Diego. I just plain miss Calif sometimes. lol
But I would never go back. I have lived in the country for so long that I could never live in a city again.
I can plant or grow what I want and have what ever kind of animals I want.

I buy navel oranges and avocados but I think the oranges come from some place other than the USA. They are nearly dried out inside when I peel them. If they were grown here I don't think that would happen in a week. But who knows.

Quote: Cold storage oranges get that way... dehydrated.... I suspect your oranges come from Florida mostly. But you got to remember Oranges are a winter fruit so if you are buying them in summer they either came from another country or were stored.

I used to live in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties.... you wouldn't recognize them if you haven't been here in a while.... The cities are merging... land that was acres and acres of beef cattle has been sub divided. R1 plots in a sea of Uniformity.... Left Hand Right hand All built by the same developer in massive quantities... All the trees are the same height....

Even though they all pat themselves on the back for conquering the Air pollution you still get that feeling in your lungs when traveling through... You know like you've been swimming in a chlorinated pool too long.

My little patch of heaven is just remote enough to keep the city at bey. Ten acre minimum. That was voted in back in the seventies I believe. So if you see a plot of land smaller it was divided off before. So the key to getting acreage in California is buying Virtually off the grid. and remote.... unfortunately that places you somewhere beyond commuting distances for work.

Sigh.

I agree on the oranges. I knew something was wrong with them. Or they would have been juicy! I miss the real thing from the local farmer to the local market!
That's why I am growing my own fruit as much as I can here. I am thinking of adding a green house so I can grow citrus and other plants for food that I cannot grow here.
I just am not sure what we will do with the farm when my husband retires yet.
I have family that lived in the Riverside and San Berardino areas. They have farms with horses and cows.

I have traveled as far as Az. many years ago and coming down out of Flagstaff I could not hardly breathe! The smog was so bad. We don't have that here, yet!
