It will likely get worse too. La Nina is supposed to make the lower half of the state dryer than normal this winter. California beef farms greatly reduced stock over the past 4 years due to the drought. This is my local grocery.

Quote: We pay the same price gor the ground beef, but the sirloin and other prime cuts we pay some more.
I have a wonderful Butcher that have ALL the parts and cuts I want. He sells 3 kg (~7 pounds) of brisket, or ribb meat, for 120 shekels (~35$)
Deb can you grow rabbit as another meat option?
at my house yes... but I couldn't process them same goes for lamb or goat. But here in the city the most I could raise would be a few chickens. you can get chicken in the store for about 99 cents a pound.
I dont need red meat really but i think Muscovy Duck will fill that need. They dont need alot of water too..... You can make pastrami and preserve it as if it were corned beef.
You can even make a kind of ham with it.... Brined and dried procheuto style.

Hey Deb, I don't understand. Your home is it in town? Is that why you could not process your own poultry or rabbits?
Quote: Ron I don't know if that is it or not. I live in the middle of cow country and our beef is priced just as high here. It's crazy! I know we must be exporting our beef somewhere and then we are paying the price double for their shipping costs!

Hey Deb, I don't understand. Your home is it in town? Is that why you could not process your own poultry or rabbits?
My home is on eighteen acres up in the high desert sixty mile east.... I havent been able to live there ever since I took the job of caring for my grandmother. I live with her here in San Diego. little community called Santee. I tried to go up to the house three times a week to care for the livestock and it was working till the pump on the well died. I couldnt afford to fix it immediately.... during the time i was trucking water up coyotes wiped out my chickens. Couple of weeks later something got my goats. So now only my horse lives there with a neighbor that comes over to feed for me.
Here you can have chickens and no roo. The lots are very close so I wouldnt be able to keep a coop fifty feet away from a property line as well as fifty feet from the house. Which is code.
I couldnt dispatch a rabbit no matter where I lived.... If I could get someone to do it for me I would be ok with that. same goes for goats and sheep. but only livestock that iwould consider livestock not pets.
