Hi @rob74 , welcome to the forum. The amount of salt you would need to add to keep water from freezing would not be good for the chickens. There are lots of tips on this forum for waterers in winter. One tip that is clever is based on the fact that continuously moving water does not freeze, so some people have found that putting something that floats in the waterer like ping pong balls will delay freezing for most of the day. Of course that would not prevent freezing over night. Here in Michigan I need to use a heated dog bowl plugged into a outdoor rated extension cord.

Thank u for the info I'm just worried about our chickens...their not close enough to the house to run electric for a heated waterer or a heat lamp...I have wrapped the run part of our coop with tarps to block the wind and they have a great house that I built for them I also worry about them freezing do u think they will be ok with what i have already done for them? Thank you again for responding to my questions

Fortunately chickens are pretty cold tolerant. My chickens chose to be out in the run today even though it was around 20 Degrees F outside and I don't provide heat in the coop. Only the roosters with really big combs or wattles have had a little frost bite on sub zero nights, so now I put some petroleum jelly on their combs to protect their combs when it is extra cold. The hens have been fine over the years despite the cold Michigan winters. A lot of people who can't run electricity to the coop used rubber bowls for water that you can get at the farm store. They change the water morning and late afternoon. The water freezes over eventually, but the rubber bowl can be thrown on the ground to get the ice out and filled with fresh water. The chickens typically get enough water before it freezes over.

I got some chicks and I really don't know what breed they are. They look like light brahmas but I look closer and they have four toes but one toe is cut in half making it two. What kind of breed is this? I uploaded a picture too..m
