Aspiring Coturnix Quail Homesteader

Look up the quail hatch along thread (click my link following.) https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/➡-quail-hatch-along.1276785/

Feel free to pop in with questions... there are lots of knowledgeable people there, plus always a newbie or three. I’m still learning... been too busy with chickens and turkeys, ducks, geese & cows to actually dive into quail but I likely will in spring (assuming we do spring or summer or fall next year for more than a couple weeks...)

If you read from the beginning it’s better than any quail-raising book I’ve found. Also, look up “Slightly Rednecked” on YouTube.

Welcome!

We found one male per cage with 4-6 females worked well. You can put in more females, depends on cage size. Make a Bachelor pen. The farm we purchased from had this set up: breeder pens and bachelor pens. You can cull the males at 6 weeks - depends on the size you want them, but they are often sexually mature at around 6 weeks. Mine started to lay as early as 5.5 weeks, up to 7 weeks old to begin.

good luck -quail meat is tasty.

Thanks so much everyone for the welcoming and tips! I am going to go ahead and follow everyone's advice and keep it to one rooster in each cage. We are going to build our hutch this weekend and order our birds once we are all setup to start. Thanks again all!
