Good morning all,

I am a long-time resident of the Chicago suburbs and became interested about a year ago in keeping chickens. This project is still in an early stage of development, and I'm not planning on starting until next spring (2010)--this spring is far too busy already with a (greatly) expanded veg patch and honeybees!

One of the big challenges I face is *finding* a place to raise chickens--my suburb does not allow chickens (but has no limits on the number of dogs you can keep???) which will lead to my first post. But I'm also interested in general topics such as breeds, coop designs and placement, and how to keep hens happy and healthy over a nasty winter.

Looking forward to lots of interesting reading over the coming year!

Welcome!! There's a ton of info here, and you'll soon be so addicted you'll change your laws out of desperation! We're glad to have another future junkie in our opium den!

Hoping you can find a way to move forward with your plans.

Welcome! You can learn a lot here and then when you "can" have chickens you will be set!

Welcome!

I had the same predicament about where to house my birds. I put an ad in craigslist and got a few responses. I ended up moving my birds to a horse stable. My coop is 4' x 8' enclosed in a 7' x 13' dog run. As long as you don't plan on taking up too much room, I'm sure there are a lot of people who have extra land who wouldn't mind free eggs and maybe a couple of bucks a month.
