At first i thought my kids were playing tricks on me! My first backyard egg!

I'm so excited now that I read yur posts. I bought my reds from TSC on April 15 and they had a few feathers so I was thinking they are about the same age as yours. I know it can't be long before mine lay now. The combs are big, red and bright but no squatting or egg song. Thanks for this post and congrats:D!!!

Yep, yours are probably about 2 weeks younger than mine. How many do you have? I bought 6 of them but one of them vanished on their first night outside. I did not want to let them free range this afternoon because I was afraid one would lay in the yard somewhere, but they looked so pitiful that I let them out. Good luck with your egg watch.

So far, our first laying hen has laid an egg every other day since she started. Her second and third eggs were smaller than the first one and my mom told me that granny said that pullets usually lay double yolk eggs first. Well granny kept chickens and my mom grew up with chickens, but I was skeptical because I had never heard anything about that before. Well this morning I cracked that first egg and......(drumroll please).......it was a double yolker. And fertile too. I guess granny was right. I wish she was still alive, I would love to talk to her about chickens. I don't know what the little black specks are but I picked them out before cooking the egg.

That's great!!! I wish I could call my Daddy and tell him about my girls and ask him questions. He passed 2 yrs ago. I think he'd love it. We got dbl yolks once in a while when I was a kid,but of my 3 that are laying no dbl yet! I found where my RIR hideout nest was today. She took up in a vacant dog house near the coop. There were 3 eggs in it. One was really warm,so I knew it was todays I moved the doghouse where she can't get in it. Hopefully now she'll lay in the bucket {box} I set out in the coop.

Mine range all day, it's time to put them up,but my gate is brokena nd there's ways for them to burrow under the yard.
