Hello,

I purchased 4 Barred Rocks from Cackle.
I believe they were hatched the 14th of June.
It feels like I've had these 4 for alot longer.
What is the estimated time until I begin to see first eggs?
I know every breed can be a bit different.

Thanks !:frow

Good morning. Every chicken can be different really. If you’re in the Northern Hemisphere then they may begin pretty much any time, but may not lay until next Spring when the days begin to lengthen. It’s really up to them.

My Barred Rocks started laying at 20 weeks, being fall yours may not lay regularly being shorter daylight, but they should start up soon. By spring you should be knee deep in eggs. :)

theyre one of the slowest ive had experience with .. around 6 mos average id say ... once they get going though they lay good almost every day for a couple of years ..

I bought 8 barred rock chicks on March 24th, and a couple started laying at 16 to 17 weeks, 4 months old. It was probably another 6 weeks before they were all laying.

It depends on the strain you got, too. Some come from lines that start laying early, others don't. Depends on the bird.

Keep an eye on their combs and wattles. When they start growing out they're getting close to lay. And they might start submitting for you too (squatting when you approach).
