Hey all,
Two or three years ago, I had to get rid of all my birds, supplies and everything. A cholesterol lowering medicine that I was taking was slowly killing me! Fortunately, I figured out what was causing my problems and quit taking it!! Though I will never be 100% again, I am doing much better than I was when I got rid of everything.
I don't have any birds yet. But, I am in the process of getting some. There is a lady on BYC who also lives in West TN who I am going to get my chickens from. She has set eggs for me. Assuming that all goes well, I will be getting 10 each of Black Australorp, Plymouth Barred Rock, and Light Sussex. She is also incubating 10 quail eggs. And, I told her that I would take all of them that hatch! And, there is a gentleman here in West TN who I will be getting 50 Pharoah Coturnix Quail and 3 trios of Bob White Quail from.
If all goes well, my birds will be ready to pick up in about 3 weeks. And, about the same time I pick all those up, I will be ordering either 50 or 100 Cornish X to raise for "Cornish Hens" and for fryers/broilers. So, I will go from no birds to 139 to 199 birds... almost ovenight!! I am TOTALLY stoked about it!!!
My Black Australorps, Plymouth Barred Rocks, and Light Sussexes will be culled down to 4 to 5 hens and 1 rooster of each breed. And, to keep the breeds pure, the breeds will be kept in separate chicken tractors. I'll move them around durning the summer to help keep down on fleas, ticks and other pests in the yard and to fertilize it. And, in the fall and winter, I will place them in the garden to help get rid of undesireables there and for the free fertilizer!!!
What more can an old country boy ask for... maybe a good ripe tomato sandwich???
I know that BYC is THE BEST source of information about raising fowl!! And, there are some WONDERFUL people here!! So, I'm back to pick your brains... and, to hopefully be of some help to folks too!!!!! See you around the boards!!!
