I had an outreach today with our zoo. Halfway through the event, we had a swap of staff. The incoming group brought a small carrier of what I thought was either a scorpion or tarantula. Umm....I was wrong.

Here I am in this small space, boxed in with tables, and the ed specialist brings out MADAGASCAR HISSING COCKROACHES!!

The other volunteers dash over to get some to hold, too. So these things are all around me, and I can't get away.

I almost quit. Seriously. I've been with the zoo for 7 years, and can handle snakes, rats, the tarantula and scorpion, the alligator, but the roaches were just too much. I'm going to have nightmares.

You can handle all those dangerous animals- and you CANT HANDLE ROACHES! 0_o

ohhhhh it gives me the heebie geebie's just reading this post. I know exactly how you feel!! I work in a vet clinic and would much rather come up against a mad cat swearing at me in cat talk ready to rip my arm off than get near COCKROACHES uuuhhhggg.
Yes I am perfectly aware that these things are captive bred and probably very clean but BLEURG.
I think I'm gonna have nightmares too now.

In fact I'll get my chickens on them!!! They'll protect me!!

I tell ya though, they were so big, they'd probably eat a chicken.

I feel the same way. I'm happy to cuddle a snake, hold a ferret, and play with a rat - but my reaction when I see a roach is to stomp it or call for birds.
