I was up late the other night reading various forum threads, and read all the discussions about sour and impacted crops. It freaked me out a bit. Is this something chicks get? Is it something common that happens when the are older? I find I'm watching my chicks' chests obsessively since reading about this, esp. since I'm feeding them a little grass in the brooder. Can I relax?

Yes!

Just be sure they have some form of grit to grind it up. You can give sand or some of the fine grit at the bottom of a grit bag.

Remember that it's not unusual for people to come here because they have a sick chicken. There are over 80,000 members and far from all of us have had any of these problems. I've had my flock about 4 years now, and had other flocks over the years, and have never seen any of the problems on here, other than a minor injury or two and a case of fowl pox, which they all survived just fine without treatment.

Maybe you should stay out of the emergencies forum for a while, and enjoy some of the others! And take a deep breath and relax!
