I am wanting and needing (ticks all over!) guineas, but I can not raise them from little babies. At what age are they too old to move to a new home?

I want young ones, but would three or four months old be too old to get them and have them accept here as their home. I know they need to be raised where they are going to live, but what is the cut off age of when you can get them?

They would be confined to a pen for some time, to learn this is their home, but I can't do it for several months. I need tick help as soon as possible.

During the confinement period you should begin the training of coming to you by using the same call phrase each time, feeding a little of any special treat and also at each time you put out their feed. Mine were picked up at a week old but I did this several times a day.

Soon they accept you, your voice, your special phrase and relate it to feed and good times. LOL Mine are comfortable with me but, only because of constant voice, etc.

Then begin releasing them for short times at first, calling back with treats. Soon they will have it down as "their" place and generally come back in for you. Practice makes, well not really "perfect" for guineas but, sorta good for you. Repeat, repeat, repeat.

These are smart birds in a few ways but, REALLY dumb in other ways. As Peeps says, they will fly over a fence and forget how they got on that other side -- running the fence all day to try to get back over "somehow". It is SO true. I had one who actually made a path by this running.......he never flew back but, I eventually made a hole and after several days he could get himself out. First time I saw him doing it for several hrs, that night others were on roost and calling, he was still running! This repeated often for a while....until I got tired before him.
