Our chicks are a couple weeks old and we have already given them a little green grass and a few meal worms, along with some fresh ground up corn meal. I am a bit concerned about their ability to process these feeds and I have read they don't need grit until 18 weeks? They have done well with everything so far though we have given minimal amounts of all but the the corn meal. it is ground up very fine with a few chunks that the chicks do their best to eat before I can pick them out.

I'm not sure where you heard that they don't need grit until 18 weeks of age. Definitely NOT correct. They need grit as soon as they start eating anything besides their chick starter. If they don't have access to the ground you can just supply a dish a chick size grit that can be found at the feed store.
