At what age do you start supplying grit to your chicks?

I get conflicting info on when to supply chicks with grit. Bought some at Tractor Supply Co. and the package states to start them at 2 wks. Mine are about 6 wks old, no adult birds yet. I threw a very small amount in their feeder along with the chick starter feed and some on the ground in the coop. When and how do you start your chicks with grit?

I use sand as a litter material, so they have grit on about day 3(once the paper towels come up for good)

I always followed the advice to sprinkle grit on their food like "salt" after the first few days. This is super fine granite chick grit that I do not see at TSC & places. Bought some 20 years ago at the feed store & still have some! I think they suggest this in case they ingest some litter etc. Many don't give grit until they are given something other than chick crumbles.

Im kinda new at this but i sprinkle a littke oyster salt every once in a while...its a digestive aide and supplies calcium

I started supplying the chick grit when I started letting them forage. It's in a heavy old flower pot that they can easily get to it without breaking it or taking a sand bath in it lol. I have seen them all take their fair share. You can see it there in the background in the green flower pot.

Fine or chick sized granite grit is the first "food" item that my chicks see. About a teaspoon full on a piece of cardboard when they come out of the hatcher or from under the hen.

At the top left of this post beside the "reply to thread" tab is a "start a new thread" tab. There is a "start a new thread" button at the upper left of each forum as well.

Look in the upper left hand corner, to the right of the "post a reply" button and click on the "start a new thread" button.
