At what point does it become fatal?

I grind the brand new chicks food up in an old coffee bean grinder. It makes it super easy for them to eat.

But what I really wanted to know is how long can the chick survive under each of these conditions. What if it's butt gets pasty in the middle of the night?
I did get some plain yogurt and will try it.

98-94 degrees is way too hot for week old chicks. If they are scattered away from the light, they are too warm. They say to start them at 95 and drop 5 per week. Mine always seem happier starting about 90.

I had 2 with pasty butt that I picked up at TSC last week.....I soaked their bums under warm water and gently crumbled the poop away with my fingers. I didn't have to clean them more than once. I put Quik-chik in their water. I've heard other people say to put Apple Cider Vinegar in the water if you are having a constant problem.

If you are changing out the bulb, don't worry about it. I take the chicks and put them in a large box while I clean the brooder and they are fine. I've always used a 250 watt red bulb.

"Pasty butt" won't kill them overnight - thank goodness, or we'd all have given this up long ago. If you don't clean it away (and it's usually only a problem for a matter of a few days) it can block the vent and cause a bowel obstruction, but not overnight! This would take a few days. The little buggers are pretty tough, really - travel thousands of miles in a box, don't eat for several days... I've never lost one, newborns! imagine!

Thanks, that's what I wanted to know. Their temp. was at 98* the first 4 days, then down to 94*, now it's 90* ( 1-1 1/2 week olds). I didn't want to drop it too quick because they were still getting used to a new place.
All the help has been much appreciated.
