Athena the Coyote Chaser

looks a little too small for a wolf to me....but what do I know. I have never seen a full grown wolf, but I had wolf hybrids and they were pretty large. they died of old age and one got hit by a car when i let it out to run...still blaming myself and crying.....10 yrs later.

Still a coyote

Sometimes the coyotes will sit out in the brush at our house and make sounds like an injured animal in order to lure our dogs out. Of course all our animals are locked up a night so there's no chance, but they sure do try! In the morning there will be hundreds of tracks outside our gate. We have an 8 foot fence around our property so we have a little deterrent at least.

Yeah, I would expect this at night & my dogs are secured then as well. This incident happened at 9:00AM when it was broad daylight. Before I got my Great Pyrenese 2 years ago I lost chickens to a coyote at 10AM. I guess the coyotes around here are either early risers or stay up longer into the morning than normal. I wonder if it has anything to do with living in such close proximity to humans their whole life? My area is definitely suburban, not rural by any means.

I don't think mid-morning sightings are all that uncommon. I only hear the 'yotes at night, but I've often seen them (thru a scope when I'm lucky) as late as 11 am and occasionally much later in the day. We're fairly rural on 9 acres with a creek, some woods and the fields so it's good habitat despite the hwy that runs next to the far end of our property. Coyotes are incredibly adaptable though and can be found almost anywhere, including urban areas.

You've got a good dog! My lab mix will chase them off, but didn't learn about stopping before the tree line until after she ran into a pack of them. She got lucky that time and knows better now.

I usually call most of my coyotes in the early morning hours, in the first two hours of daylight. They are awake most of the day though, but they are great at hiding. The one time of year they get stupid is calving season. All that protien on the ground, placenta, etc.
