As much as I dislike garter snakes I say let him stay. They are great for bugs. I wish I had one. If you don't want him you can mail him to me. My bugs will make him nice and fat.

I have to make it clear that I'm just kidding about mailing him.

Do what I do when I go out to the garden. Humm or whistle or just make some noise. They should hid or scoot away while you are out there. Just think he went home tonight and told his wife guess what I crawled over today. It was gross!!!

Be aware They Are DEADLY!

Red Variant Eastern Garter insect eating machine. They are great just don't let your kids talk you into keeping one in the house if you don't have a covered terrarium, they are live bearers and you'll be finding little flat Garter's in your shoes when you come home from dancing...

garters are cool, adults rarely bite, even spazzy babies don't bite much, as much as try to wiggle away, atleast the ones I've handled havn't bitten, I've been bitten by more darned hatchling gopher snakes, been bitten badly by a black snake once, OUCH.

they eat lots of bugs, and don't get big enough to be a real threat to your chickens or ducks, but do seem to like a bantie chicken egg on occasion

You're lucky to have that little guy there. You probably scared him far more than he scared you. He's probably still telling his friends..."did you see that thing??? It was 8 feet long, and reared straight up in the air, Im tellin ya!! I thought I was gonna die! People just give me the heebie jeebies!!!"
