I have 3 hens (1 Barred Rock, 2 Rhode Island Reds) they have finally decided to start laying. From the first egg, they now want to be petted and sort of squat down and spread themselves out a bit. Chatting at me all the while. As soon as I pet them and cluck back, they seem to be fine. However, now the Rock has decided to jump up on the perch and wants me to hold her???? I don't get this at all. Is this a normal behavior?
Thanks so much. Hope that you are all enjoying this lovely sunshine on the snow that we are having on the Palouse of WA.

Hens squat down for roosters when they want the rooster to mate with them. It may seem weird to think of your pets thinking thst you'll mate with them, but it's still normal. It happens to a lot of people. It means you're doing a good job at feeding and protecting.
