Because production reds are not a breed there is no standard. Depending upon the parent stock they can be varying shades for brown/red. The chicks are slightly different and the resulting hens will look slightly different. I know at my "TSC" they lump all the red chicks together and just refer to them as Red. There could be production reds, RIR, NHR or even sex linked all mixed together because they can't tell the difference. It probably starts at the hatchery level and they just lump them all together figuring people don't know the difference.
