(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I’ve had chickens off and on for20 years. I remember when BıackyardChickens began.
I went to a feed store just west of Eugene, Oregon and bought three baby chicks because the lady said they were social animals and if I bought only two and one died, the remaining chick would be alone…I chose three different breeds, took them to my condo, put them in a box and before they grew up enough to live outside, I built a sweet little coop in the patio area. I was surprised when I found eggs because I didn’t think they could lay eggs without a rooster… but they DID!
When the condominium association discovered them, I had to find them another home. A lovely family with children up the hill bought the coop and the chickens and they lived happily ever after - or so I hope.
When I moved to MidMissouri, I lived at a farm where there were dozens of chickens and a few roosters but I was not their caretaker. I moved to a house, built a coop and bought more chickens. Along came three raccoons. A fox. A hawk, a dog, snakes, a boy on a bike with a dog behind, more raccoons - the coop was too near the woods, trees and shed. So this year I will move the coop out into the garden, cover the run, fence off everything in two or three layers of wire and pray the chickens will be safe.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Yesterday I bought 12 fertile eggs and am hoping they hatch. They’re in an incubator made of a little oven with a “ferment” setting. Maybe I should buy an incubator.

(3) What breeds do you have?
I don’t know yet. The eggs are a variety of colors. Two I know are DEEP brown… French Marans

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
The humor, the fun, the eggs, caring for a pet, watching them grow & develop.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Gardening, writing, making healthy traditional foods (100% sourdough rye bread, kombucha, ‘other’ lacto yogurts, natto & more).

(6) I am an author, editor, proofreader, designer of books. In Oregon I practiced hypnotherapy for the purpose of healing patterns left over from previous lifetimes - fascinating!

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I must have heard about BYC when it first began. There were only mailing lists, I believe, in those days; simple websites; not the fancy stuff we have now. :)

Hello Patricia, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
didn’t think they could lay eggs without a rooste
Chickens lay eggs because they're born with all the yolks they're ever going to have. The only reason they need a rooster around is to fertilize those eggs. Then if they incubate them they will hatch chicks.
Maybe I should buy an incubator.
Yes. You definitely should. I will be surprised if any of your fertilized eggs hatch in the setup you are using.

You also don't need to have many layers of wire to secure the chickens. You just have to have one layer of very securely attached 1/2" hardware cloth on 3 to 4 ft wide spacing.

Welcome back!

Hiya, Patricia, and welcome to BYC! :frow

Did you know you can feed your kombucha scobys to chickens? They love it! I've fed it whole or chopped it up and it doesn't matter which way. It's a huge source of probiotics among other things for them. I gave up drinking the tea, but was still raising the scobys for a long time.
