Hi guys, my Australorp hen who is about a year old or so has been acting weird for the last day or so. She is usually a greedy girl who loves food, and now has no care for it, won’t even come over to us when we feed the rest of the flock.

She is known to be a bit lazy, often lying down towards the afternoon, but now all she does is lay down and appears lethargic.

She hasn’t laid an egg yesterday nor today, am thinking she may be eggbound? No egg at the vent entrance and I can’t feel any egg when touching around the vent and her abdomen.

Any ideas on what might be wrong or what I should do?
I have attached a couple of photos of her from the last 24hours.
Thanks in advance.

Ps they have plenty of yard to roam around…..they just favour the undercover when it rains!

I don’t think she’s necessarily egg bound just because she skipped a day of laying. That’s perfectly normal. But that puffed up stance is indicative of a sick chicken. What does her poop look like?

I agree with blind lemon, she looks uncomfortable. It can't hurt to pop a calcium tablet into her, just in case, but don't soak her, if sh'e sick that can make it worse. Not eating is very concerning, try to tempt her with a special treat, scrambled eggs, tuna, wet mash, something soft and easy to swallow. Check her crop for signs of impaction, smell her breath, does it smell sour? look inside her mouth, feel her abdomen, swollen, hard, squishy? Look for mites or lice, check her feet , anything out of the ordinary can provide a clue. That's all I've got.
