Australorp vs Wyandotte

I have three Black Australorps. They are very quiet and they're consistent layers. And yes, in the sunshine, they look iridescent.

I will get more chicks this spring, and want to get Blue Australorps. But if I can't get blue, I'll get more black.

We currently have three 3 week old chicks - 1 each buff orp, silver laced wyandotte, and black australorp.

The orpington is by far the most chill about being picked up. She'll jump up onto my hand. The australorp is a bit more skittish, but also has FOMO and wants to follow the orpington and also sit on my arm and get pets too. She's smallest and lowest on the pecking order. The wyandotte is by FAR the most stand-offish. She will perch on me if I put her on my hand, but scream/trills at first when I pet her. Then she "runs away from me" by perching on my head. :lau

The australorp looks like a penguin right now too, with her white belly fluff, so that's cute. The wyandotte looked like a little wren as a baby though, which was also adorable. Maybe that helps?

Thank you all for your input! I'm leaning towards Australorp, mainly because the birds I have now are really gentle, and I don't want to take the chance of getting a hen that could disrupt that. Perhaps if the flock was bigger, I wouldn't worry so much about that.

I've had both, and liked both, but I love my Australorps. I had 3 SL Wyandottes. They were very nice & friendly, but they were so loud! They seem to holler about everything, lol. They were good layers, but not as good as my Australorps. The Australorps have been better layers. In fact, I just picked up 12 blues yesterday. Can't wait for them to get big!

Thanks for the reply. It helps to have the input from someone who had both!

My Australorp is at the bottom of the pecking order and is my rooster's new favorite, so she looks a little scruffy now. She is beautiful with a full coat of feathers. Hopefully someone else will become the favorite soon. He changes his mind a lot.
