I recently received an order of Australorp hatching eggs in the mail. What a surprise it was to see their shape - very long and narrow. Is this the typical shape for Australorp eggs?
I have a small flock of 5 hens, but only one is an Austrolorp. Her name is Ivana and we love her. She's friendly, tends to be quieter than the others, reliable egg layer. I like watching her in the flock 'cause she's not the boss lady, but will stand up for herself if she needs to. Not skittish either like my SLW. I would get more of them if I had the room, but the kids picked out the breeds. I have a Deleware too, I am not thrilled with her.
We have about 20 or so left and they are great birds. They are not high strung or jumpy, just kinda like a fat cat, they just watch everything going on and then check it out. We have one hen that follows you around until you pick her up. Cold hardy, friendly, good layers, and good sized.
I have always thought the Australorp was a breed that doesn't get any respect lol. I mean I hear alot about Buffs and Barred Rocks and such but little talk of the Australorp. I find them a great breed-they are good foragers, layers, docile and excellent broodies.
Hi I am new here and pretty new to chickens. I bought 3 laying hens of the blacks Astrolorps and I love them and since then, I got 3 more young hens and a roo to raise pure breds. I absolutly love them!
I also have a mixed flock in another coop of RIR,wyandotts, REd and Black Sex links, americunas EE hens.
I like all of these breeds, not a mean one in there. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do, and the laying power of these hens is great!

salon,
my australorp's eggs are long and narrow. They are also much paler and shinier than my other brown eggs, and a little smaller. I LOVE my australorp. She is gorgeous, funny, friendly, and lays a LOT.
