Assistance? the gov't SAVED NO ONE! Not a single person was rescued from lethal conditions. They didn't come in until days later. So..how exactly did LOSING $8 billion was helpful. Have you been to New Orleans in the last 3 years? I have, I work UPS jobs out of there every year and it's still a bacterial pit of disgustingness like it was RIGHT after Katrina. I have friends who work for FEMA DOING ACTUAL WORK, not getting $10,000 write offs and no-bid gov't contracts like RAY NAGIN's BROTHER!! CRIMINAL. And yet, no one else even keeps track of these things. I am QUITE glad that 90% of my income can not be taxed in the USA...i'm only invested 10% in this disaster. LOL. sorry, couldn't help myself.
The prepared laugh the last laugh.

btw, didn't Ray Nagin's brother have a contract to fix the SAME LEVEES that broke MONTHS/YEARS before Katrina?? Kudos to whomever can google the amount he received from the gov't in his no-bid contract AND which levees broke that HE WAS paid to fix in advance!

oh, and Katrina would be REALLY easy to leave. The people were given FAT CHECKS for property and possessions they DIDN't even have to prove that they owned!! And yet when my CD player was stolen out of my car my insurance company wouldn't reimburse me without a receipt, UPC (proof of purchase) and signed affidavit from police. LOL. I don't care about the CD Player (it didn't even work), but it just makes it so funny to put the 2 next to each other and see how rediculous things have become. I paid for that insurance, flood insurance is provided by the gov't (WHICH I ALSO PAY FOR

ANyway, sorry to upset anyone, but if i don't put in my .02 then I don't know if people are being ignorant on purpose or just by no fault of their own. (sarcasm <--spreading it thick)

EDIT: I'm sorry if people think i'm directly attacking them..i haven't read anything except the first post and the posts on page 17. I'm venting about the general idea of "bailing other's out"

It is affecting everyone across the nation the same way though. Detroit or Michigan isn't the only one suffering from this, it's the entire nation.

And I tend to agree with Will's perspective on things. I know this is going to get much worse before it get's any better, and I pray for the families that will be directly impacted, as mine has been, but, a bailout is not the answer. I hope congress lets them fail and then, and only then, will we be able to actually come up with a workable, longterm solution.

If we bail them out now, we are just throwing good money after bad, and that won't fix a thing/ It will only prolong the misery.

I pray everyone will find a way to pull together and help out there neighbor. If your in NC, then you can count on me to help you if your cold or hungry.

"Why don't you leave if there is no job opportunity, much less hope or a community? To me, it's nonsense to ask me for help WHEN YOU KNOW that the area is failing with the only hope of "making it through" being a government handout. I would have more pride than that, but I don't know your situation. I just know that Detroit is a dying city with VERY little to NO potential. "

I did leave several times. I was gone for 5 yrs living in Tennessee and Colorado. I came back 4 yrs ago because of my mom who went blind for a year-(diabetic caused cataracts)-my mom has been able to see again for 2 yrs now and she's fine but she refuses to move out of Michigan. She's 62, Michigan is what she knows and she will visit other places but doesn't want to live there. I wanted to move this summer back to Tennessee but my mom is what is keeping us here. My sister and her family live in Colorado and we could move there but again, my mom. Its harder to leave this time because my daughter is VERY attached to her grandmother, she found her dad and other relatives when we moved back here and so she is very attached to them too, my nieces are here and my other relatives. If it weren't for my mom we would probably be elsewhere...that said...not everyone should jump ship off a sinking boat...its harder for others than for me-(I am not directly affected by the decline of the auto industry in the Motorcity but I am indirectly affected) but I feel it and see it, and its going to get worse here but I have to stick it out...my mom is active but I still call in her prescriptions and take her to the store etc. The only thing I can do is become more self-sufficient which is the reason I am raising chickens. But not everyone can or will do that.

Its easier to say...why don't you just do that or this...I thought the same thing until I was put into a position in which I couldn't just leave. We used to just sell off our stuff or donate everything and move on to some other place but I now have to try and convince my mother to move out of state when it took 60 yrs before she moved out of Detroit, and she was blind was the only reason I got her moved out...so its not that easy.

I agree that the CEO's have wasted money and still do and have no concept about working things out...they aren't used to comprising with anyone but its the people they are over that are affected...and yes people are losing their jobs everywhere but the auto industry is a major industry that could just tip things for this nation for those that don't think we're in a semi-depression...like I said, its not just Michigan that is affected by this but it is mostly Michigan who it affects because most of the industry was started/remains here.

I understand the anger, I understand the slippery slide of all this bailout nonsense but I am just thinking about how much worst things are gonna be...without the Motorcity, what would Detroit/Michigan be??? What impact would it have on everyone...the ripple effect? I just don't know...

omelettesmom, Yes, she gets unemployment during those two weeks-(unemployment doesn't pay the same amount as what she made)...she is 24 and she is taking care of her mother and her niece. Her mother is unable to work-(heart condition) and she is raising her orphaned granddaughter so this 24 yr old girl took in her mom and niece to save money because she was paying for two rents, etc. but she was depending upon her first job-(she works full time at two jobs)-which is to make parts for all three auto companies to pay the majority of the bills...now she is sitting at home from the first job for two weeks at a time...and its making it much harder for her to make ends meet for herself, her mom, and niece.

I live in Louisiana, born here and lived her almost all my life. There are things that got put in the news here that probably did not make the national news about Katrina. People taking advantage of the system and then getting caught and having to pay it back or face jail. Some got both! At least the governement took care of alot of the ones that took advantage of the situation. I am sure not all. IMPO not place is perfect in this country if you really look deep enough.

But the auto bailout, the more I see on it the more I wonder what the furture holds. The government is now giving the Big 3 a month to come up with a plan on how the bailout money would be used!
Why didn't the automakers already have that figured out if they are in such a bind!? Why don't the share holders make the CEO's take a pay cut and any other persons with such outrageous salaries!

IMPO, everyone in any big company makes to much money and is to greedy. Even in NFL footbgall, that is why I don't watch. They get paid enormous fees to catch, throw and run after a football

:he:he . Same for any other professional sport and there CEO's, coaches, etc.

Ive heard that Obama is for the bailout. His thoughts on the matter will carry alot of weight in the hearings.
Why does this feel like a replay. In the 70s almost the same thing was going on with the gas shortage and the push for smaller cars. The auto industry answered with their version. I think of that fugly charger that looked like a Gremlin(sort of). Then of course no shortage and people wouldn't buy little cars no more. I personally buy and drive American. A hybrid car out here would be a joke. I couldn't even imagine driving one with the mountains and wind we get. Not to mention trying to drive threw the winter storms. I conserve by not driving as much.
There's work out here in the oil fields. Dangerous, but pays well. Of course theres no place to live while you earn that money. The coal mines are already setting up for a lay off. Obama wants to add an extra tax to coal. Another type of sin tax.The CEO's decided that will recoup any lost coporation money they may have due to this.
My Aunt lost her place in the Mississippi flood. No insurance at all. FEMA gave her a grant and now she lives in a nicer place then before the flood. So not everyone has to be insured to get money.
Our taxes all go to the U.S. I'm willing to donate to the 3 big ones with revamping of the CEO's pay checks. Make it a loan and not a hand out.

I was just thinking if we give them all this money does that me we all get one free car. the price of cars is crazy. they charge $30,000 for a truck they built for $10,000. maybe they should cut into there profits and bail themselfs out.

I would go for that loan and not a hand out.

I know what you mean on the auto thing. I remember mom down sizing to a smaller car. Her job required alot of traveling. My sisters made fun of it. But you have to do what is best for you. If we had not become a country of greed, instant gradification, and keeping up with the Jones to impress others by living above our means. Charging on credit cards and not being able to pay them off in a month or two. The big gas guzzling SUV's, I remember when Disel was cheaper than regular gas. Then more disels were selling and the diseal is higher than reg. How convenient. That just hurt our truckers, made our items we buy go up! (food that hits people the worst) Other things people can do without. Seems like our own country wants to destroy itself. WE use to be on top of the world.

Obama, I won't even make a comment on his cabinet choices. I just hope he does the right thing with the Auto bailout.
Why don't we hear some of these big rich guys that made there money from nothing saying what they think? What is that really rich guy? My mind went blank!
