I am looking to mount an auto chicken door to the human door to my run. I currently open and close the human run door daily for free range. The door is 26.5 in. x 60 in. and swings out from the run. I would need to access the run to fill feeders, waterers, clean, etc., so all of the auto door components, string, need to be able to move with the door.
I will need to construct a new human door regardless (without HC panels) to clear the present HC apron and the inevitable snow apron ( no clearance with present door) so I am looking for ideas on best compact auto door and configuration which would be mounted around 18 inches up from door base. If any members have a similar set up I would love to see pics of the mounted components.
TIA

This is how I did mine. I used to just leave the human door open, but a great horned owl decided to fly in through there, have a meal of several chickens and then got stuck inside trying to figure out how to exit again.

Thanks for the reply. The link to your media seems restricted. I get an error denying access, Anyway, I did stalk your coop build… WOW! Very posh and well documented build.
The owl intrusion you experienced is concerning. I am rethinking my entire human door configuration now; I know there are many owls where I live, but other raptors just as bold, too.

Is there a reason for it having to be on the door?

What is the look you are going for? Hidden? Rustic? Don't care if the parts are showing? On Outside exposed, on Inside exposed?

What type of door? Swing? POP? String? Linear Actuator?

Door dimensions?

DIY skills?

Materials you have/working with? Will buy if idea good enough?

Does the entire Auto door have to be on the Walkin door or can the controls and battery be elsewhere?

If you are going to make the door without the HC panels then I suggest you make a semi hollow door and place a linear actuator inside. It would need to be made of 3/8" plywood or hardwood planks. So you will probably need to put some Thompsons water seal on it.

If you upload any pix of doors that you like it to look like, I can work up a 3D model of what the inside will need.
