just finished coop and run and put in an automatic door. I made the door using an "add-a-motor" curtain motor. Right now it operates off a lamp timer. The motor automatically resets in reverse so it opens and closes at set times. Wondering if anyone knows how to set it up to work off a photocell..."open at sunrise and close when dark

The add a motor works by activating each time power is supplied to it, whereas a photo cell activated motor would need to work by turning in one direction when a signal is supplied (ie sun hits to sensor) and then reversing when the signal is lost (the sun disappears). I'm not sure this motor can work in that way. The signal would need to cut off and then back on somehow at dusk in order for it to close.

I've always wondered what happens when a dark storm rolls in. Does the door shut and leave the birds stranded in the rain?

I am using the same motor and I like being able to personalize it to whatever time I want. I also still go out every evening and do a head count; but the motor gives me some peace of mind about their security if I have to leave before light or get home after dark.

That's the issue I've been dealing with. I've found a drawing of how to wire a reg motor to work, by running through a relay but with the add a motor aIto reverse it won't work. No bigger if I can't do it, just something I'm toying with. Right now I'm having problem enough getting six, five week old buff hens to learn to go in at night

Put a solar light in the coop so it isn't dark inside when its time for them to roost. That is what I do.
