automatic coop doors

I have a few Pullet Shut doors and one home made door with a Chicken Guard opener. I like both types. The Pullet Shut is VERY sturdy and I am sure it would stand up to a predator. The Chicken Guard is easier to program but I don’t think it’s as secure.

Both have a light sensor so I don’t have to open or shut the doors at dawn and dusk.

I have an omlet door on a wooden coop. I had plenty of horizontal space but not vertical, so there were not many other suitable auto door options for that case. It was a little fiddly to mount due to the shape of what I was putting it over and some unfortunately placed rims on the wood that I couldn't get rid of easily, so I ultimately had to build an extra wooden frame onto the coop and then mount the door on that. I've been very happy with the door so far. The fact that it sticks out a bit more helps keep rain out as well. I use the door on its timer mode, which I've found to be easier to work with for my birds at least than the light sensor mode. It has also been very good at keeping snow/ice out of the mechanism. Once after a big ice storm it had to try a couple times to open all the way, but it was still able to do it on its own without any ice-chipping help from me.

Can you post pictures of your door? We are trying to figure out what it will look like in the house.

The white door is the Pullet Shut and the silver door is home made with the Chicken Guard closer.

You can use an automatic car antenna for your opener. How and where to mount the antenna depends on how you want your door to open, (up - down or slide side to side). You can do a search on the net and find many examples. I bought all the parts needed, and wired it up, but never used it because the coop door opens into the run, and the chickens can't get out of the run until I open the run door. If you want to go this way, here is a wiring schematic for hooking everything up.
