I was wondering if anyone has used an automatic door for their coops? I have seen several online and we are going to implement it into our coop design, but we are not sure which one is best?

Does anyone have any experience with these? Thank you

I have a friend whose husband rigged up one using a power drill with a really long threaded rod. Something (I don't remember what) is mounted on the door for the rod to rotate in to move the door straight up and down. The drill is on the ground partly buried. Never any trouble with the hens messing with it. It's on a timer. The chickens learned how to get in the coop before the door closed. That system has been working for a long time. I think it's regular electricity rather than solar, but not sure.

Do a search on the forum and you will find lots of threads. We have the one like Foy's carries, although we got it shipped from overseas. Foy's wasn't carrying them, yet. It's been working great for us, for about 4 years, now. Figure out whether you need battery or electric, timer or light sensor. Also, some prices include everything and some prices are just for some parts and not others. Besides the opener, you need a door, a way to power the opener and a timer or light sensor. Some types of batteries, like car batteries, need a solar charger, too.

I have two which my DH installed AFTER a possum got in the coop and killed two chicks.

It's very inexpensive compared to some of the others, but I LOVE IT!! Quality is great!
It's made by "home discount automation" I'll find the link---

Jennh, I check the link you provided and couldn't find anything that would work for a pop door. Can you provide a link direct to the product your talking about or give a name and what tab it can be found under?

Thanks

Here's the link to the Foy's "Electronic Doorkeeper" automatic door. Yes, it's pricey. But it uses 4 AA batteries, so you don't have to run electricity to the coop. It uses a light sensor to trigger the door opening and closing mechanism. http://www.foyspigeonsupplies.com/catalog/2100-2107.html

I
have two of these units, one in each of my largest coops. I absolutely love them.

I purchased the same one that Foys has, from Wells Poultry in the UK. The product is made in Germany, so it has to be imported no matter what. I paid around $50-75 less, including shipping, buying directly form Wells Poultry versus getting it at Foys here in the US. I arrived in less than 2 weeks.

I have no power to my coop, so it works on batteries which is awesome. I bought the one with the timer so I could personally let it know what times to close it.
