Automatic Water For Winters

I live in NE Tennessee, so we do get a real winter (it will be 19 degrees tonight with snow), but not a long one. I want to set up an automatic watering system for my flock, but am wondering if they can be used during the winters? I currently have heated waterers, but these are a pain in the butt to fill and I end up spilling 1/2 gallon down my front walking from the house to the coops.
