So I purchased them and filled them last night and empty this morning I thought they just filled automatically when it got to a certain level of lowness. If this isn’t the case, and the chicken has to press on the yellow depressor to make it fill up how in God’s name do you teach them to do that?

There is a new version that fill up automaticly for quail, which should work fine for chicken. You press and fill the water for them when you can and they will learn in few days with this old version. I've been using them for awhile without any problem. The nibble version also work the same way.

Newer version has no middle paddle in the cup to press:

If you container is clear, you can see water level lower. Otherwise, fill the water in the jug/bottle full and check back by open the cap to determine the water level. You just monitor for few days. I highly recommend install more than 1 cup. If 1 fail due to crap block, at lease they can get water from other.

I usually put 2-3 cups on 1 container to save space. Keep in mind, the cup work fine for warm climate, but the water will be frozen in the winter.
