I apologize for the long story, but I'd like you to have the whole story.....

So I have had some bad luck lately. I've had 3 cockerals pass away with similar symptoms. I have lost one about once a month for the past 3 months (first was in July, then august, then today). So here is what is happening... Day one, they are totally fine, the next day, they are sorta puffed up and standing alone (this is when i notice them). Day 3, they are still sorta slow and alone, so i go to scoop them up and they don't run (which they normally would). I notice they are a little wobbly on their feet and put them in chicken hospital with some vitamins and special foods (eggs, and stuff). They look normal (eating, drinking, talking, normal comb, etc) other than seeming really weak/wobbly and very thin. The next stage has varied a bit, but usually within a week they stop moving and just lay around. The day before death the comb goes purple, they refuse to eat or drink, and the next day they are dead.

I decided to do an autopsy on the one who died today. Well i found some interesting things.

First off, not an ounce of meat on his poor little body (that's his outer thigh) :

He was obviously starving, although his crop was completely full (see crop and that is his CHEST!):

His heart was completely covered in this yellow flakey stuff:

Next his lungs had a little of the yellow flaky stuff:

Finally, he had these HUGE blood clots near his spine:

I checked his body for injuries and didn't find any bruises or broken bones.

His Liver looked good. The only thing that looked really large was the gall bladder?? (the green thing in this pic)

I am fearing Marek's Disease!!! I have never had such awful luck with Chickens Health. Everyone else seems totally healthy, i checked everyone for mites and nothing. These guys seemed totally healthy too... until they weren't :(

All 3 of these cockerals were from the same Daddy (an EE), different Moms. The first one was 4 months old, the last 2 were 5 months old.

Had anyone seen anything like this, or have any ideas what might have happened?

PS.... if it happens again, i do plan on sending them in for necropsy.

You are saying that only the rooster's have this going on? Marek's doesn't pick a certain sex to attack, so I don't think that's what's going on.

@Kiki @azygous @Wyorp Rock What do you think?
Yes, only the roosters (so far). But they are in a different coop than most of the ladies. These 3 boys are in my "bachelor pad".

If one of your birds has confirmed Marek's disease, all of them do.
Maybe you're only seeing your rooster suffer but you can consider your whole flock positive no matter What cage they're in. The disease travels in the wind and dust. It is impossible to prevent it from spreading from one cage to another.

Sorry I did not read the whole thread I'm just responding to the one post I was tagged in.

Yeah. That is what i am worried about. I did read over the symptoms of Mareks, and he didnt have bumps on his skin, and i dont think he was truly paralyzed either (just didnt want to stand). He also wasnt blind. He was just sooo incredibly skinny and that crazy yellow crust on his heart and lungs. And he deteriorated so fast 😭😭. I am thinking the worst.

What state are you in?
Are you aware that you can send a dead bird's refrigerated body to a state lab for a necropsy? Some states only charge 20 bucks.

It really helps to know for sure what you're dealing with when it comes to illnesses or disease.

We can all play the guessing game all day long but I'd prefer to know for sure myself.

Yeah, i plan on sending the next one if it happens again.

He was obviously starving, although his crop was completely full (see crop and that is his CHEST!):
Did you open the crop to see what was inside?
Was there any food in the gizzard, and stuff in the intestines being digested?

I'm wondering if his crop or gizzard got clogged up, so nothing could move further down the digestive tract. That would cause him to lose weight and appear ill, he would probably try to eat (knowing he needed food) until the crop was stuffed full, then he would quit eating (because the crop was full), and of course would ultimately die of starvation.

PS.... if it happens again, i do plan on sending them in for testing.
That sounds like a good idea.

If no hens have sickened and died, only roosters, I would look at their living quarters for something toxic. The way you describe how they die, sounds like an environmental cause. What is different in the bachelor coop from the hen coop?

Are they drinking from a galvanized steel bucket? Are there old lead pipes carrying water to the rooster coop? Have you set out any rat bait nearby? Is the coop an old building with very old paint?

Yes i did open the crop. It was only food and a little grass. Nothing that looked like it would clog him up.
