Avaian flu and adding chicks

I'll have to see if the next batch that TS gets has those! I procrastinated too long and when I went today they were sold out... I never thought I would be so upset over not getting chicks! 🤣 I definitely would love to be able to have colorful eggs right now I have a RIR and she's awesome probably my friendliest one and a mystic onyx she's a lieelt skidding but lats pretty cream eggs and then a barnyard mix that lays some speckles lol!
Chicken math! I wish I could get 1 of everything!

I would say if there’s none in your area it seems they’re ”quarantined” while they are in the brooder, unless youre doing an add to a broody hen it’s a different story. I hatched, there is none in counties near me but I have 5 different coops for them but one big run. they should be okay. I. Would just be prepared for anything and GOOD LUCK and pics if you get more!!
With avian flu in the rise is anyone adding chicks? I was thinking about getting chicks from my local Tractor Supply but didn't want to potentially harm my 4 existing chickens. I guess what I am asking si will everyone be ok since chicks are pretty much quarantined from thw other birds for a bit anyway? And has anyone added birds or decided to not add birds I just really want to hear other people's opinions.
Thanks in advanced

Flu or no, I personally just don't trust TSC chicks. They don't appear well cared for and I've heard of a WHOLE bunch of deaths. I use a local farm supply store -- maybe find one of those or just someone who has chicks to spare.

Yeah I am finding that out now. I went to tractor supply and got 10chicks one died that night they replaced it next day and then I just had another one pass. This is my first time doing chicks but I feel like its a pretty simple set up and they were probably not doing well when I got them.

Just a note on TSC: they get chicks shipped to them. Since you do not have tracking info, you don’t know if they were delayed or how long they were en route. The shipping stresses the chicks. TSC is offering a valuable service bringing chicks to you, with a replacement guarantee. You can pick the liveliest chicks there, knowing that they have removed the already dead ones. Sometimes, even with great care, chicks die.

I think all the deaths were last year when they tried those stacking rack brooders. Now that they're back to the stock tank and heat lamps they should not have that problem. I was in my nearest TSC the other day and saw some that had obviously just arrived--sleeping, small, etc and they were not huddled, but comfortable.

Yeah, it’s too bad those brooders failed at the store level. Not enough staff training, or point person(s) to make sure they were used correctly. I was in one TSC and those stacked brooders were used correctly -chicks were happy and spread out, etc. nice to see them from the side, certainly more energy efficient, and used no light so the chicks would naturally have night. But, in another TSC, shivering chicks, and set up wasn’t as well cared for. Overall, the bins and heat lamps seem to be intuitively understood by all the employees, so better success.
