So what is the average age and should I expect it to be later due to winter weather? My 5 girls will be 18 weeks tomorrow.

Average age depends on breed, strain, and time of year....

Average for my summer production type birds are 20-24 weeks. (spring chicks)
Average for my winter production type birds are 24-28 weeks. (fall chicks)

Average so far for silkies in the summer is 24 weeks... my winter batch of silkie girls here... it's been 22 weeks and their combs show no sign of wanting to pop out eggs.

Anytime I've had chicks, they started laying around 6 months of age.
