I was wondering what the price differences were everywhere for speckled Sussex. Then I got to thinking about it and I was wondering what prices for muscovy, naked necks and silkies are. If you some or all these prices in your location please comment with bird and price that would be very much appreciated.

Here in VA if I'm not mistaken (my quotes are based on craigslist and local places)

Speckled Sussex: chicks $5ish, 15-20$ for 6wks ^
Muscovy: chicks 1-5$ 5-20$ 6wks ^ (wide range)

Naked necks 10$ (Only seen 1 local )
Silkies???

Please correct me where I'm wrong if you are from VA.

Thank you everyone in advance.

Hi, I'm not familiar with VA...

But here the issue trying to sell straight run chicks for more than they can get sexed at the feed store and guaranteed to be disease free.

People can advertise for whatever price they want... whether someone is willing to pay depends...

I sell my Silkie chicks for $10-15 each as hatchlings depending on color and NOT broody hatched. Once they are identified as female $20 and once laying $30 ($50 for the harder to find colors like paint and cuckoo). BUT I work very hard on my genetics and cull for all faults. Quality is key to any sustainability when word of mouth counts.

Naked Neck Turken, I have bought for $3 each when young... under the fallacy of "local" but learned my lesson and rather buy from the hatchery for the same price. If they are well selected for their traits I think they are great birds. If you will be SELECTING (culling) for faults, people are much more willing to spend than if you just backyard breed. Including these things in your ad, raises your value.

Regardless of breed I value all my birds around $20 once they are off heat but before lay. And around $30 once laying, even if mixed breed.

Speckled Sussex is my newest breed that I will offering... and they are MUCH easier to get than good quality Silkies or French Black Copper Marans... which I also sell for $10/ st run chick, as fast as I can hatch them. Due to the ease of finding them (speckled Sussex) at many feed stores and hatcheries... I am thinking maybe $5/chick for the speckled Sussex. But I don't know how popular they will be, what hatching challenges I may face and that type of stuff... Most people who buy my birds... are buying the whole package... local, quality, experience... and therefor, never had anyone complain about price and many repeat customers. But in no way is it a get rich quick scheme... I probably made $1000 (1 thousand) this year... and consider it to barely cover JUST my expenses and not my time. It's a labor of love.

I once had a batch of mix breeds to check my incubator function. They sold for $2 each before one week old, by chance someone was looking.

I see Muscovy all the time as well... they seem about standard duck price. Which here is about $7-10. I would personally buy at Metzer before that, as their price is about the same but sexed... however, Muscovy is one breed they don't offer. Your suggested price seems fair, after raising ducks... they are little porkers!

In live very rural, and people usually drive not less than 90 minutes each way. Some as far 5-7 hours each way plus an overnight stay at a motel! I don't consider that average though. Of course your market will be very different than mine.

I am just doing what I love. Sharing with people (even though they pay) is the real reward! I didn't plan it... I just meant to get 3 chickens and then maybe 2 the following year... but then I found BYC... and about all the different breeds available... and the enablers! :p

Good luck figuring out your market. Hope you have a grand adventure! :wee
