I've noticed that certain breeds (LF) are slower to get busy pipping/hatching than others. I have my typical "early birds" that get started on day 20 and others that wait until day 21 or even day 22. Is this typical? Over how many days is the average hatch for a set of eggs of the same breed and/or mixed group? When do you call it quits and remove the hatched chicks and check the remaining eggs? Given all of the eggs in a set have been exposed to the same temperatures and humidity, what other factors determine when they hatch?

Hmmm... Other factors would include how long each egg had been stored before setting and different parent birds. There are probably many more but those two are what spring to mind first. Its an interesting question though. The first few hatches I did, each time with eggs all the same breed and from the same place, I got a few chicks out on day 22 then sat waiting for the rest of the eggs through days 23, 24, 25, hey someone else on BYC had eggs hatch on day 26, right? Beginner's optimism I suppose. Anyway, none of them ever did anything. Now I've had a few successful hatches I've got a better idea what's normal and what's not, and the pattern seems to be that if they are going to hatch, they all pip within less than 24 hours of each other. My last couple of hatches, I waited till the last hatcher was out the shell, then I immediately float tested any remaining unpipped eggs. Every one has been dead in shell and I've been saved days of hopeful waiting and eventual disappointment.
