Dear all, Aina here. I live in Hawaii lost my dear Chica a few years ago and was able to incubate and raise her last three eggs. 3 hens!
Leanna died a year ago. Egg bound???
Yesterday Michaiah was dead on the front of her coop she shared with a black wild hen "BB" I adopted 6 months ago.
BB was fine yesterday morning.
Noticed Julia, Chica's last baby was still on the tree next to my door and had clear fluid coming out of her mouth and puffy eyes with yellow discharge.
I took Julia to the vet as well as Michaiah's body. $230 later the vet said Julia seems to have upper respiratory symptoms. Gave me antibiotics and drops for her eyes.
Last night BB acted weird and eventually perched herself in the coop. Except she clearly showed she had no balance and about to fall. I later picked her up and put her in the egg box she used to use. This morning she was away from it, on the floor, barely able to walk, not feeding, not drinking and no signs of respiratory infection: eyes are clear, but beak is a bit open and no fluid.
At 3 AM when I gave Julia her meds she appeared to have less puffy eyes and no more drooling. She also laid one egg (!).
I gave both the same antibiotics (amoxycillin) this morning and tube fed Julia. Not yet BB.
Now, what could it be? One hen dropped dead yesterday with no apparent signs of anything, one get sick a few hours later even if NOT IN touch with the two, and the last one who shared the coop with the dead one has different symptoms...
I talked to my neighbor two homes down and her 2 hens are fine...
Avian flu?
So desperate trying to save my little girls...
Mahalo (thank you in Hawaiian),
Aina
