avian pox

I just got off the phone with my father in Texas,He has raised chickens his whole life.He told me in the early days when they didn't have all the treatment they do now they would sprinkle Yellow Sulpher in the coops and around the buildings. The chickens didn't mess with it, and the bugs didn't like it. He said it help with the flys , mosiqt, nats. Just want to pass this along. I'm going to try this so my Girls won't be bother. I know I have been trying everything else without much help. Hope you find this helpful.
where do you get yellow sulfer?

That is kind of what I did....the only place I saw to get the vaccine was online vet supply and I figured by the time it got here that the damage was done. My chickens seemed to not be that effected by the pox other than they looked boogered up and the few that had it around the eyes would kind of sit away from the others a lot....I noticed about a week ago that another one had just two black dots on her comb....maybe just about all of them have had it for now.... Been reading all the stuff about West Nile....live life to the fullest because tomorrow is not guaranteed.

I am new to this page, and just starting out with chickens.I have 29 hens and 1 rooster. They just started to lay in Aug.2012 and were up to 25 eggs aday. Now we are down to 15 aday. Some of the hens have black spots and afew have grey spots on their combs. I think it is Pox. Some say to vac/don't vac. What is you feed on the matter? Are the eggs safe and what should I do to the creeks around the coop?
A State Poultry Specialist told me that it would not hurt to vaccinate them, but I could not find the vaccine locally. The eggs should be safe. I do not know anything to do with creeks, I have a similar problem. You need to dump out any standing water in any type of containers because mosquitoes can breed in even small amounts of water....but I, like you have a pond by my house, my neighbor has one on the other side of his house, there are 2 creeks behind our house, etc.

I talk to the vet and he told me that while they are fighting this virus they are building antibotiys so thay won't be affected again. This is viral and no antibotic can help because it isn't bacterial. My father told me back when he was a boy they would sprinkle yellow sulfer around the coops and the buildings this help to keep the mosqts away some. I did this and is has seem to help some. My girls are doing great and laying well. I see about 22/25 eggs aday. on a slow day I see about 16/18 eggs. It is about 2weeks to run it's course. As long as they are eating and not acting sick just keep them happy. Good luck.

My birds had dry pox and I decided to let it run it's course. I applied iodine over the bumps and they seemed to be doing ok. Some had shown no signs at all, include my sweetest Cochin. But we found today she has wet pox!!!!!!! One eye is sealed shut and when I opened her mouth, I saw one spot on the upper portion. It just looked like a white oval patch, but flat. I didn't know what to do so I sprayed it with Vetericyn Wound Spray. I separated her from the others, although she is in the run in a little cabin, but they will not share feed or drinking water. She is the only one to show signs of the wet pox. She pecked at some watermelon today and if I hand her bits of scrambled egg, she eats it... in a bit she will open her mouth like it's stuck in her throat and then be fine. I can't see any other sores, but I am guess she has some farther down. Now I am not sure what to do... vaccinate? If I vaccinate does that mean I need to vaccinate all my future chickens as well? If I don't vaccinate, will more get wet pox or is it hit and miss? Most of my bigger layers got the dry... a few Silkies in the back pen too. The rest of the Silkies don't appear to have anything... my blue Cochin doesn't seem to have anything either, but my red didn't until yesterday too! I find lots about the dry pox, not as much about the wet. Does anyone have any advice on what to do for this type?

Just make sure she is eating enough. Try scrambled eggs... Really, anything that she is willing to eat. I had to tube feed one of mine that was unable to eat. You may also have to try to scrape the lesion off of her mouth. Keep her isolated and lots of tlc.

Thanks... that is what I gave her, scrambled eggs which she takes from my hand, watermelon, yogurt... didn't seem to want the yogurt at all, but maybe she will soon. Thanks for the tips. Hope she can make it... she has the sweetest personality.
