We have two acres in Brevard County Florida that we purchased outside of the city limits so that we could have a small family farm. We plan to raise our own vegetables and grow chickens, rabbits and lamb for food ie. eggs, meat and fertilizer. Recently, an anonymous caller reported to code enforcement that we had about 40 animals on our property ( a complete lie ). At the time, we had / have EIGHT sheep, 8 rabbits and 1 dog. Upon inspection, we were FINE - case closed. SEVEN DAYS later, we got a call from the same code enforcement saying they were CITING us. There are MANY THINGS THAT ARE WRONG with the randomness of code enforcement here in Florida but this has merely set our determination to see code changed here in Brevard County so that you HAVE A RIGHT to conduct traditional homesteading practices on your own property without interference.
In discussing the sheep matter with code enforcement, we discovered that NON-AGRICULTURALLY ZONED property in Un-Incorporated BREVARD COUNTY FLORIDA is permitted ONLY ONE CHICKEN. There are technicalities to this rule as you can read here: http://www.avidhomestead.com/hoa--sol----changing-brevard-county-code-for-chicken-living-.aspx

We
are working to promote a more chicken friendly Florida, especially here in Brevard County. We have an online petition that can be signed by county residents and other supportive parties. This is a grassroots effort to try and effect positive change for hobbyists, small farmers or families who need to have another alternative to the high prices that we are only going to see increase in our local grocery stores!
Thanks for taking the time to read this and I certainly appreciate your comments, support or signatures!

Brevard County Florida Residents!

Property zoned Rural Residential or General Use can ONLY have 1 hen unless you obtain a Conditional Use Permit. Is your property less than 2.5 acres? If so you will also need a Variance before you can apply for a Conditional Use Permit!

Sign the online petition form to help us change Code to allow the raising of certain animals and fowl, in reasonable numbers, on residential property.

Thank you for your support!

Signed the petition, thanks for doing this!

When do you plan on trying to implement change with this petition? What is the next form of action?

Signed it! I'm a resident of Melbourne and live on a 100% VA disability. Having chickens would provide meat and eggs that I cannot afford. Thank you!
